Body Machine

This project explores the scale and performative elements of the human body through the making of a body-operated machine. Limited to using two 2x4 pieces of lumber and piano wire, the machine is void of any prefabricated hardware parts, requiring creative mechanisms to be implemented. Structured on an overarching accordion mechanism, activated by the wearer’s arm, the extension and contraction of the accordion triggers four movements along the height of the machine. It attaches to the body by hooking into a wooden brace, worn as a backpack on the operator’s body, providing stability while it is in motion, and allows it to be put on and off with ease.
