This project is a proposal for Spike Lee’s Malcolm X script. It takes on the storyboarding and set design for a montage in the apex of the script, the pilgrimage to Mecca, which marks a spiritual rebirth for Malcolm. In it, he witnesses pilgrims of all races eating, praying, and worshipping together harmoniously, calling into question his prejudice and Elijah’s teachings. Denouncing his old beliefs and embracing a universal spiritualism, he becomes a leader with his own opinions, free of Elijah’s divisive ideology. His travels to Egypt and the ‘Cradle of Islam’ are humbling; there, he is one of many figures in the crowd and a speck in the vast ruins of old civilizations. How can we depict Malcolm’s transformation and humility, and how can a frame be made to feel transcendent?
